Welsh Water
FOIL built ORAI, an autonomic triage entity, to cut through the 1,800 daily alarms overwhelming Welsh Water’s control room. By separating signal from noise automatically, it returns around 12 analyst hours a day and is projected to save significant spend in a year.
What we did
Welsh Water’s Operational Response and Control Centre can receive more than 1,800 telemetry alarms on a difficult day, signalling anything from a burst main to a water quality risk, and by some estimates up to half need no action. Four analysts triaged them by hand, piecing together a picture across around 14 systems that were never designed to work together. FOIL built ORAI, Operational Resilience AI, an autonomic entity that reads every alarm, calculates risk, downgrades nuisance alerts and escalates the incidents that matter. It runs inside Welsh Water’s own Microsoft environment and works alongside the team, with a specialist reviewing its calls as confidence grows.
The impact
Early results are strong. ORAI collates in seconds what once took an analyst around an hour, returning an estimated 12 analyst hours a day to a stretched team and freeing experienced people for judgement. Mainly through faster response and reduced regulatory exposure, it is projected to deliver close to £2 million a year in savings and cost avoidance, and to trim up to 20 per cent from the time taken to restore supply after a loss. The work won Agentic AI Solution of the Year at the 2026 British Data Awards and unlocked further investment.
